One of Melbourne’s most historic hotels – The Victoria Hotel in Little Collins Street – has added contemporary comforts and style to its heritage character and charm, with a major upgrade of all rooms and public areas. A former Premier of Victoria, James Munro, established the hotel in 1880, as the Victoria Coffee Palace – a ‘teetotaller’ alternative to the rowdy, bawdy pub accommodation on offer elsewhere in Melbourne during the late 19th century.
‘The Vic’, as it has been known for over a century, remained ‘dry’ until 1967, and the dramatic transition from cold tea to hot liquor was followed by an even more monumental change when budding corporate raider, Christopher Skase, briefly added the venerable institution to his asset portfolio in the 1975.
The hotel was bought by the Schwartz Family Company (SFC) in 1998, which heralded a number of progressive changes and upgrades including the addition of a rooftop swimming pool and fitness centre.
